What to Expect at the First Appointment
The first appointment is scheduled for 60-90min. It is recommended that at least one legal custodian attend to give collateral information. For parents who share joint custody, it is recommended that both parents attend so that all parties have a chance to provide input. At times, the assessment may be completed over several appointments to ensure comprehensiveness. Medications are rarely prescribed at the initial appointment, unless medically necessary. Instead, after the initial assessment (which may be completed in one or more appointments), there is generally a separate appointment booked solely for psychoeducation about the diagnosis given, treatment options which may include therapy and/or medications. After this appointment, patients and families can then make an educated decision whether they wish to proceed with whatever treatment option they wish, knowing all the risks and benefits of the different options including risks of not treating.
